Generational Trauma PT 1
This ongoing project delves into the Mexican-American experience, focusing on generational trauma and the physical abuse prevalent in Hispanic households. By addressing these deeply ingrained cultural practices, these images aim to open a dialogue about the often-overlooked impact of such experiences and the healing potential. In this series, I depict the physical abuse that occurs in Mexican/Hispanic homes, which is often considered humorous and coped with through jokes, such as "la chancla voladora." The photographs feature common disciplinary objects like belts and cables framed in custom designs that capture their essence as punishment tools. The first image, Maternal Kombat: Choose Your Weapon, features a woman (my mother) surrounded by these objects, mimicking the selection of weapons in video games like Mortal Kombat. The second image, Childhood Hell, uses dynamic, blurred movements to symbolize the chaos and fear associated with physical punishment. The third image, Echoes of a Fractured Home, captures a disrupted kitchen scene, evoking a sense of conflict and disorder. By confronting these painful realities and inviting open discussion, my work aims to foster a healing space for myself and the audience.
